First Day of School - Brian Dewan
The morn is full of birdsong
And fall is in the air
My hands are folded on my desk
I sit straight in my chair
Today is my first day of school
I am not a dunce
And I've got my box of crayons
And a bag of lunch
What did you learn in school today
My mother said to me
I learned about the Indians
And Johnny Appleseed
The father of our country
And the farmer in the dell
And pledged allegiance to a flag
And lined up at the bell
Then outside at recess a fire truck went by
A second grader kissed a girl
And learned to make her cry
When I fell off the jungle gym
I almost broke my crown
Ashes ashes ashes we all fall down
I like my pretty teacher
And she is fond of me
When I am old enough
She'll call me to the spelling bee
Someday she will assign me a poem to recite
I'll marry her as soon as I can read and write
